Going Deeper

Monday, June 11, 2007 by Sam

There has being something stirring me in recent weeks about going deeper. Creating space to go deeper in my relationship with God, creating space for us as a church to go deeper when we gather. There is something about "going deeper" that speaks of slowness and contemplation and peace and identity and character that really resonates with me.

This line of thought was kicked off by a conversation with Stu a couple of weeks ago. When asked about his two and five years dreams for a church he was being interviewed to lead, he answered something along the line "in two years I foresee no numerical growth, but hopefully we are deeper people. In five years hopefully that depth is translating itself into a worthwhile contribution to our community". (I cant really remember his exact words, and the punk is having a well earned break overseas sometime soon but that was the general gist of it).

Which is why I love this post.

"Dave Johnson—pastor of Church of the Open Door in Maple Grove, Minnesota—says our desire for external impact should take a back seat to internal transformation."

"When God empowers us with the skills to powerfully carry out his purposes it is like a weight being put upon us, and it takes real interior strength to carry it for any amount of time. This interior strength is a character formed in the image of Christ."

"The reason many of us ignore the formation of our character, says Johnson, is because it will slow us down. Many ministry leaders want success, a big church, or a crowd. But how many of us want a real life? How many of us want a life in God? We can have that, Johnson believes. We can have a character that produces love, peace, patience, kindness…but it will slow us down. It might mean the church won’t grow as big as quickly. It might mean the crowd will get smaller.
But the alternative is both devastating and all too common. The alternative is a ministry of high impact but shallow character. As only Johnson could say it, “In the bible it was a miracle when God spoke through an ass. Now it happens everyday.”

And on another tangent altogether, I thought this was a great post by Mr Ritchie on the coming Benny Hinn crusade.

Thank you for reading this ass

Auckland Visit

Thursday, March 01, 2007 by Sam

I've being hanging in Auckland since monday catching up with old BCNZ mates, visiting different peeps for Soul Survivor.

Two photos that have a story:

Stu McGregor, one the the most respected writers and commentators in my circle of friends during "Agony Aunt", a weekly tough questions session with his youth group. Seeing Stu put on the Agony Aunt hat and have to answer some very curly questions was highly enjoyable for all the wrong reasons. And the questions? Is Masturbation wrong? Is dating a non-christian bad? And; who is more holy, NSYNC or Backstreet Boys? I had to get up after that and speak. Thanks Stu

And though this is a murky photo, it was a beautiful moment on Tuesday night as myself, dave and his wife mili sat outside on the deck surrounded by native forest and clear skies, cranked a pink floyd dvd on the big screen and soaked up the mellow vibes.

Lots of great conversations happening, off today to spend time with Rich Johnson and the guys from FreeSet. Im learning heaps from spending time with such amazing people, we are blessed here in NZ to have such a huge number of highly underated very approachable guru's.

Time to battle some traffic

Deeper than the puddle

Thursday, October 19, 2006 by Sam

So if you are wanting something intelligent to read, that goes a bit deeper... how about I just point in the direction of the guys with the smarts..
Stu has a great post on evangelism. Stu bugs me... everytime I read his blog I want to give up writing anything. He is too good, and got a brain to boot
Chez has some interesting reflections on the proposed National Statement on Religious Diversity. There is normally some good banter happening on this blog, and I like Chez, coz while we don't see eye to eye on some issues, we really enjoy having a beer together and a good catch up.
And Dan Kimball reflecting on Church, this provoked a lot of thought for me, and I would love to hear your thoughts on what he has said.

So what does my long weekend hold? Well a bored... I mean board meeting, a SSNZ meeting, and a site and production meeting. Wahooo!!! Speaking at primal church tonight and friday night will see me plugging Soul Survivor at the combined service in Fielding, flick a prayer my way if you feel spiritual.
